Counterweight To Hate

PorscheRallyCar-0831_Version6_FINAL.jpg

Robert Frank once wrote, “When people look at my pictures, I want them to feel the way they do when they want to read a line of poetry twice.” I love that. I’d love my pictures to be poems, too. And to be read twice. Or maybe three times. Or maybe even be earmarked and read over and over again. That would mean I’ve created something beautiful, which I feel is more important than ever right now - as silly as this may sound. In these times of such divisiveness, I feel the more counterweights to hate we can get the better.

What does that have to do with this photograph? God knows. All I know is that I think this 1978 PORSCHE SC SAFARI is a beautiful, beautiful car. And the only thing I can hate about it is that it’s not mine. Making its debut at the 1978 East Africa Rally - arguably one of the toughest offroad races in the world -  it came in second (after damaging its suspension), and proved beyond a shadow of a doubt how crazy tough these 911’s were. You see, apart from a raised suspension, adding off-road tires, extra headlights and a roll-cage, this was a straight-off-of-the-assembly-line model. Pretty damn amazing.

Thanks so much to Jim Goodlett for letting us photograph his beautiful machine. To Tyler Northrup for all his continued friendship and expertise. And to Bob Ranew for just being the inspiring, beautiful man that he is.
